The consequences of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia are particularly affecting the African continent. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine on 24 February 2022, a majority of African countries have suffered from inflation, disruption of their vital grain and fertilizer supplies, and sanctions aimed at isolating one of its major trading partners, Russia. Africa, concerned about the peace so often disturbed at home, aims to facilitate a resumption of talks between the two countries.

The Foundation's role
The Brazzaville Foundation, constant in its principles and its method of seeking peace through dialogue, can only condemn the use of weapons and reiterate its readiness to assist in a constructive dialogue between the belligerents. It will make every effort to contribute to this process.

Following Senegalese President Macky Sall's visit to Sochi, Russia, in June 2022 as the acting chair of the African Union, an African approach to promoting dialogue between the two warring nations has emerged.
A delegation from the Brazzaville Foundation, composed of H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, Amama Mbabazi and Jean-Yves Ollivier, followed up on this initiative, visiting Moscow in December 2022 to exchange with Russian diplomatic representatives.

Brazzaville Foundation delegates meeting with high-level representatives of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, © Brazzaville Foundation.
The delegation went to Kyiv on 13 and 14 February 2023 to discuss with representatives of Ukrainian diplomacy, and then organised in Addis Ababa on 18 February 2023, on the sidelines of the African Union summit, a meeting with the new chairman of the African Union and president of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, and the 6 countries concerned, represented by their heads of state.
Led by President Macky Sall of Senegal, outgoing Chairman of the African Union, the group includes the Foreign Minister of Egypt, representing President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, President Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, Amama Mbabazi, representing President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and the recent inclusion of President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, adding the weight of one of Africa's largest economies to the initiative.
The Russian and Ukrainian governments have been widely consulted and have expressed their willingness to commit to this African initiative. The Brazzaville Foundation announced a positive outcome to the series of visits to Moscow, Kyiv and six African countries between 22 May and 5 June 2023. The meetings of the peace mission of African heads of state were held in Kyiv (Ukraine) on 16 June 2023 at the invitation of President Zelensky, then in St. Petersburg (Russia) on 17 June 2023 at the invitation of President Putin.

It's a dialogue to enable parties in conflict to meet under the same roof, exchange views, identify major contradictions, and see how to overcome these contradictions to look to the future. This was an important step, because brothers who had previously communicated only through arms will now be able to talk to each other.
