Ghana launches its e-pharmacy

On 22 December in Accra, Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, announced the launch of a national e-pharmacy. This initiative will enable over 30 million Ghanaians to access prescribed medicines in a more convenient, cost-effective manner and avoid falsified and substandard medicines.

The national e-pharmacy, linked to the Food and Drugs Authority database, will authenticate the approval or non-approval of proposed medicines; monitor the activities of unlicensed pharmacies; reduce disparities in the cost of medicines, improve the pharmacist-patient ratio and facilitate delivery.

Fully operational in 2022, the launch of this e-pharmacy is part of Ghana's commitment to the fight against falsified and substandard medicines, almost two years after the Ghanaian government signed the Lomé Initiative.

Mahamudu Bawumia's statements can be found in the government's press release.
